5 Facts About College Merit Aid

Brian Eufinger—test-optional expert, owner of Edison Prep, and NTPA board member—discusses the current landscape of merit aid for college:

  • What's the difference between need-based aid and merit aid?
  • Can people with incomes too high for need-based aid still qualify?
  • What are merit aid grids? How have they evolved over the last 20 years?
  • How much merit aid can students earn based on ACT, SAT, or PSAT scores?
  • Does every college offer merit aid based on test scores, and how can students maximize the chances of merit aid?

What's a 'Good' ACT Score?

Brooke Hanson from SuperTutorTV (and fellow NTPA member) shares her tiers for decent, good, very good, great, and awesome ACT scores and what schools are relevant for each tier.

I love her unique focus on percent of enrolled students who submitted test scores at each school. This percentage heavily hints at how important test scores are at each school. You may be surprised by how high the percentage is for most.

I was surprised by how high KU's test-submitted percentage was (79%). Even though they have a GPA-only scholarship chart, many majors (e.g., architecture, business, engineering) still require test scores. Yet another example of how confusing and disingenuous the test-optional label has become.
